A CRITICAL STUDY OF SOURCES OF KNOWLEDGE

Abstract
The problem of sources of knowledge is one of the most prominent problems in epistemology. Philosophers throughout the ages suggest many discussions to determine “What are the sources of knowledge?,” “Which one is the most reliable sources of knowledge?” “How much and How many strength and weakness are there in sources of knowledge?, and so on. Furthermore by studying the sources of knowledge, we can assimilate the difference between eastern and western philosophy. It means that whereas most of eastern philosophy are introspective attitude and introspective approach to reality, and they accept intuition as the most reliable sources of knowledge, most of western philosophy do not so. Generally, they are the extrospective attitude and extrospective approach to reality, and they accept sense experience and reasoning as the most reliable sources of knowledge. In this paper, I will try to discuss the above main points of the problem of sources of knowledge in western philosophy.

THE CONCEPT OF CHANGE IN ANCIENT GREEK PHILOSOPHY

Abstract

In ancient Greek philosophy, the discussions of the problem of substance and the problem of change gradually develop from the time of the Milesians to Aristotle. The Milesians and the Pythagoreans discussed about the reality of nature and they introduced the problem of substance firstly but they did not deny the appearance of change. Moreover, there are some important sources for the philosophy of Parmenides and that of Heraclitus.  Parmenides and that of Heraclitus discussed about the nature of reality. Parmenides discussed the nature of reality as permanence whereas Heraclitus as change. With the view of the Atomists, they tried to reconcile the concept of permanence and the concept of change by the aspect of atoms and by the composition of these atoms. Finally, in the philosophy of Plato and Aristotle, the problem of substance and the problem of change are systematically discussed. Thus, the concepts of change in ancient Greek philosophy laid down the basic foundation for Modern and Contemporary Western philosophy. Although they discussed the concept of change seriously, their discussions designate only features of change in our sensory, not introspective experience of change.

A STUDY OF THEORY OF EVOLUTION

Abstract

In the history of philosophy of east and west, theory of evolution is one of the oldest and the widest theories. We can trace back its roots and sources from the times of the ancient Greek philosophy in the west and the ancient India and Chinese philosophy in the east. And it is spreading out in the fields of philosophy, especially in Metaphysics, Epistemology, Ethics and Philosophy of History, and other disciplinary such as Cosmology, Biology, and Psychology and so on. Moreover, it is still living and its strength and power affect on contemporary philosophy. In western philosophy, there has been an evolution of evolutionary hypotheses from earliest Greek speculation down to the latest pronouncement of scientific theory. This thesis will contribute the footsteps of theory of evolution and its influence upon western philosophy throughout the ages.
