Supervisor - Daw Phyu Phyu Thin (Assistant Lecturer)

Abstract

ERROR Analysis is a type of linguistic analysis that focus on the errors learners make. In English Language Teaching (ELT), error analysis plays an important role in teaching-learning process. The aim of this study is to analyze the errors in the essays written by grade 11 students from No 1, Basic Education High School, Meiktila. The objectives are to indentify and classify the types of errors and to investigate the causes of errors. The data were collected from 50 essays of 50 Grade 11 students from N0 1, Basic Education High School School, Meiktila (2013-20014 Academic Year). These data were analyzed according to McKeating's (1981) five stages of errors analysis: recognition, interpretation, reconstruction, classification and explanation. The results suggest that most of the errors made by the participants are omissions and the most frequent types of errors at linguistic levels are syntactic errors. It is investigated that the main causes of errors are the incomplete application of the rules. Thus, the teacher should not only comprehend the types and the sources of the students' errors so that he can remedy them but also give the complete grammatical rules repeatedly in order to make teaching-learning process effective.

"THE TELL-TALE HEART" AND "THE BLACK CAT"
BY EDGER ELLEN POE

Candidate - Ma Khin Oo Thar (2-Maha –Aha-3) (2015)
Supervisor - Daw Nwe Nwe Wai (Associate Professor)

Abstract

In this research, the famous short stories "The Tell- Tale Heart" and "The Black Cat" written by Edger Ellen Poe are selected for analysis. The aim of this paper is to compare characters and plots in the two short stories. The objectives are to investigate and analyse the characters and to find out the construction of the plots of the two stories. Characters and the plots are analysed by means of the models of Pickering and Hoper (1986). It is found out that both stories are basically the same, i.e. they are the same types of scary twisted story but they do have some significant differences. The most striking difference is the way in which the reader finds out the ending of the stories. In "The Black Cat" the reader finds out the ending of the story in the traditional format, at the end of the story. However, in "The Tell –Tale Heart" the reader knows the ending at the very beginning of the story. It is found that Poe uses different ways to set up the two stories. As characters may differ in stories, different plots may also come out even from the same author. The more varied the plots are, the more interesting they will be for the readers. Because of the skillful writing of Poe, the readers become to understand human nature. Through the portrait of his characters, Poe is able to draw up both stories alive all based on fear. Since character and plot play important roles in a story, it is hoped that this research will be an aid for those who want to study Poe's short stories.

Antonio is the title character of the play. Antonio is very generous and helpful to his friends around him. He is a racist because he hates Shylock for being a Jew. But he is memorable character because of his generosity. He is the protagonist of the play. He is the model of Christian and the ideal of nobility in friendship. Shylock is a Jewish moneylender. He is a racist and revengeful man in the Shakespeare's times because of his demand "a pound of flesh" instead of the loan from Antonio. He is the play's antagonist. From the modern audience's point of view, he is a sympathetic character. Portia is not only beautiful and wealthy but also mature and intelligent. But he is not a heroine of the play. In the eyes of the modern audiences, she is a racist because of her words "the complexion of a devil" that refer to the prince of Morocco. She is just the protagonist of the play. She is a remarkable character because of her fine qualities. The role of each character has a constant effect on the play.

Candidate - Ma Kyawt Kyawt Toe (2-Maha-Aha-7) (2015)
Supervisor - Dr Soe Soe Win (Lecturer)

Abstract

This research attempts to explore how and what types of cohesion are used in some tales by Maung Htin Aung to create a logically and cohesively unified whole. The tales are selected from the book "Burmese Folk-Tales" and they are – Tale (1), "The Rabbit Has a Cold", Tale (2), "The Eclipse of the Moon, Tale (3), "Why There Are So Many Pagodas at Pagan" and Tale (4), "The Great King Eats Chaff". To investigate the types of cohesion used in the selected tales, the Halliday and Hasan's model of cohesive analysis is used to analyze the data. Accordingly, the collected data are analyzed into two main types – grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. Furthermore, grammatical cohesion is classified into reiteration and collocation. The findings show that the use of lexical cohesion is grater than that of grammatical cohesion in Tale (1), (2) and (3) because these tales involve many repetitive actions and the author uses collocation effectively to portray the setting of the tales. However, in Tale (4), the author uses more grammatical cohesion than lexical cohesion because reference is frequently used to refer to someone or something in the preceding sentences in the tale.

Abstract

In this research, a study of some selected poems: the lyrical ballad 'Lines Written in Early Spring' the two Petrarchan sonnets 'The World is too Much with Us; Late and Soon' and 'Composed Upon Westminster Bridge' is presented. This research aims to analyse the selected poems according to 'Access Literature'. The objectives of this paper are to find out and interpret figures of speech and to analyse sound devices used in the selected poems. The subject matter of these poems is the relationship between man and nature. This research is not only qualitative research but also a quantitative one. When figures of speech are analysed, personification is significant in 'Lines Written in Early Spring' and 'Composed Upon Westminster Bridge', and symbols are significant in 'The World too Much with Us: Late and Soon'. Figures of speech in the selected poems help the reader understand the underlying meaning of the poems. Moreover, the sound devices are mostly found in 'The World is too Much with Us; Late and Soon'. Through the use of sound devices, the poet evokes and inspires the reader's emotional feelings. In addition, when the metrical form of the selected poem are analyzed, the use of iamb, trochee, spondee and anapest is found in these poems. The variation of 'foot' makes the selected poems more rhythmic and melodious. By using these devices, the poet gives the messages of the poems. The message of the first poem is that living things in nature are in harmony with nature except human beings because human beings faced challenges in industrial revolution, and they did not have a chance to protect nature. The message of the second poem is that man's progressions towards the materialistic world destroy the natural resources. The message of the third poem is that nature makes not only living things but also man-made structures beautiful. All the devices play a vital role in analyzing the poems.
